About J. Eric Gentry, Ph.D., LMHC


Author HeadshotJ. Eric Gentry, Ph.D., LMHC, is a board-certified expert and internationally recognized leader in the field of clinical and disaster traumatology. Since opening his clinical practice in 1990, Dr. Gentry has trained tens of thousands of professionals and paraprofessionals worldwide in the treatment of traumatic stress.

Dr. Gentry received his doctorate from Florida State University, where he studied with Professor Charles Figley, one of the pioneers in the field of traumatic stress. He went on to become one of the founding faculty members and curriculum designers of the Traumatology Institute at Florida State University and later served as co-director of the International Traumatology Institute at the University of South Florida.

Dr. Gentry is the co-author and co-owner of the Traumatology Institute Training Curriculum, which encompasses 17 courses in field and clinical traumatology leading to seven separate certifications. He is also the co-author of the critically acclaimed Trauma Practice: Tools for Stabilization and Recovery (Third Edition), published by Hogrefe & Huber in 2014.

Recognizing the risks of burnout for counseling professionals who work with trauma survivors, Dr. Gentry co-developed the Accelerated Recovery Program (ARP), the world's only evidence-based treatment protocol for compassion fatigue. He is currently a founding board member and vice president of the International Association of Trauma Professionals (IATP), Consulting Director at the Traumatology Institute (Canada) and the owner of Compassion Unlimited, a private psychotherapy, training, and consulting practice based in Sarasota, FL.

In his career as clinician, researcher, author, and consultant, Dr. Gentry draws equally from the latest research in brain science and his 33 years of clinical experience with trauma survivors. In his spare time, he is an avid hiker, motorcyclist, sportsman, and songwriter.
