Most people with complex traumatic stress don’t know they’re traumatized.
Trauma doesn’t only develop from big overwhelming tragedies.
It can also show up in people who have grown up in psychologically toxic environments, experienced emotional neglect, experienced prolonged captivity, or who have no stories of physical abuse or physical tragedy at all.
Complex traumatic stress can be caused by:
- emotional abuse and neglect
- domestic violence
- sexual abuse
- institutional betrayal
- systemic oppression
- attachment issues
- captivity
- human trafficking
Complex traumatic stress feels like:
-
constantly being on edge, even when others perceive you as calm
-
believing others are always untrustworthy and the world is a dangerous place
-
regularly questioning if people truly care about you or not – and wondering why they would
-
not being able to control emotions and sometimes not being able to feel them at all
-
being afraid to hope that you could feel better, that others could love you, including your flaws, and that the world could be more than just a place to get hurt.
Everyone with complex trauma deserves to understand what is happening in their bodies so that they can recover.
